The backers of an ambitious bid to market Castlebar as a vibrant destination for shopping, culture, leisure, and entertainment have just unveiled the brand identity for the project.

European Mobility Week 2009 takes place from September 16 to 22 and the aim of the week is to encourage people in towns and cities all over Europe to get out of their cars and move to a more sustainable means of transport. This year, for the first time, Castlebar is participating in this exciting new project and it is hoped that the people of Castlebar will participate and really get behind this. “We're encouraging people to get out of their cars, and walk or cycle to work and school for this week and into the future,” said Noel Gibbons, Road Safety Officer with Mayo County Council.

There has been much discussion and debate in recent weeks on the national airwaves about shopping local and the dash for the border by shoppers in the Republic. Minister Mary Coughlan has called on the public to spend their cash at home in a bid to save our own economy but other commentators feel she has no right to make such appeals when it is the Government’s fault there are such glaring anomalies between the prices of groceries North and South.

Castlebar Chamber of Commerce has launched a gift voucher initiative. Mayor of Castlebar Councillor Michael Kilcoyne launched the voucher at the Chamber offices on Monday night. “I think this is an excellent idea being promoted by the Chamber of Commerce,” he told members at the launch. “The voucher is guaranteed and you can use it in 33 different outlets around the town. Even if you don’t use it inside one year the chamber will extend the date of the voucher. That is really welcome.”
